Description:
There were four main contenders for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 1906. Of these, Winston Churchill of Cornish, an author who had represented his town in the legislature in 1903 and 1905, was a dark horse reform candidate. The party machine took his candidacy lightly at first. Charles M. Floyd eventually won the nomination, but Churchill's support had surpassed that of political stalwarts Rosecrans W. Pillsbury and Charles H. Greenleaf. In addition, the party platform embodied his ideas for the abolition of free railroad passes for legislators and repudiated corrupt lobbying.
