- Description:
- Robert Tufton Mason (1635-88), grandson of John Mason, principal founder of New Hampshire, tried from 1659 until his death to establish his claim to New Hampshire and much of northern Massachusetts. He attempted to weaken Boston's hold on New Hampshire and to fill the vacuum himself. Mason failed because his claim was weak, and he lacked the required wealth and connections to counter well established settlers. His petitions to the crown did, however, help to precipitate royal rule in New Hampshire.
