Description:
Grace Metalious (1924-64) was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, to Franco-American parents. Her first novel, 'Peyton Place,' reveals her rebellion against her origins, but it is her last novel, 'No Adam in Eden,' which provides the best insight into the adaptation of French Canadians to a new urban-industrial existence in New England. Matalious's life and literature serve as a reminder that ethnic identification can be "confining and disruptive, as well as warm and romantic."
