Description:
Franklin D. Roosevelt surprised many political observers in defeating Alfred Landon in the 1936 presidential election in New Hampshire. Roosevelt's personal popularity and the success of New Deal relief and recovery programs probably account for the victory. The president carried only three of New Hampshire's 10 counties, but he carried populous Hillsborough County by more than 11,000 votes. Relief and recovery programs employed more than 9,000 workers in New Hampshire in the fall of 1936, mainly in urban areas.
