- Description:
- New England's first revival occurred in 1727, a result of the region's second recorded earthquake. An outbreak of throat distemper in 1735 precipitated another religious awakening. These and other factors helped make northern New Englanders psychologically receptive to the revival of the 1740's, triggered by the preaching of George Whitefield, who arrived in New Hampshire in 1740. The experience of Maine and New Hampshire, however, suggests that lasting ecclesiastical innovations were not automatic. In northern New England the main effect was not a dramatic religious event, but a subtle mood which affected later events.
