Description:
Scientism has challenged history as literature three times in modern history, all in times of uncertainty. Gibbon and his contemporaries at the end of the 18th century, Turner and Beard at the turn of the 20th century, and Berkhofer in the 1960's have sought the certainty they thought an empirically based historical science could create. Jeremy Belknap, who started writing history in such a climate, was influenced by both the Enlightenment and Romanticism. His rationalism combined with a new aesthetic consciousness, and he fashioned a vision of social happiness relevant for a century.
