- Description:
- Henry Ranlet was a printer for 22 years, longer than any other Exeter printer of that period. He published six of the 25 books copyrighted between 1790, when the first federal copyright law was passed, and 1800. In addition, he published a newspaper, did printing for the state government, published almanacs, printed business forms, and even published music. His shop also functioned as a bookstore. His inventory suggests that he was quite successful. Ranlet and his wife died in midlife; two of their sons died in early manhood, leaving no one to keep Ranlet's records intact, which may explain why he is not better known today.
