Description:
A long-overlooked account of Abraham Lincoln's 1860 visit to Exeter is to be found in the 'American Ballot,' published at Exeter from 1859 to 1865. Other accounts of Lincoln's visit to New Hampshire suggest that his Exeter speech was essentially the same as others he made in New Hampshire. The detailed account in the 'Ballot' sheds fresh light on the event, and indicates that it marked a change in Lincoln's addresses, as he tried to freshen his material before his appearances in the major cities of southern New England.
