- Oral history is a profession in the making. As such, its definition is important, because a philosophy of the profession can develop from, and with, its definition. At the present time, there are many definitions, each without accompanying philosophies. Without a philosophy, oral history is in danger of becoming a 20th century form of antiquarianism rather than a tool to illumine 20th century life.
