Description:
In 1893 a bitter controversy developed in Claremont over a proposal to replace the 18th-century meetinghouse with an opera house-town hall. The old meetinghouse was inadequate for the growing town. The town voted for the new project in 1895, but there was a controversy over the size of the project and the selection of a design. The building was dedicated in 1897. Closed in the 1960's after almost 20 years of total disuse, the building has recently been restored.
