- Description:
- By the mid 19th century most academically trained artists had stopped exaggerating the natural features of New Hampshire's White Mountains to fit romanticism's desire for dramatic natural vistas. Then travel books with illustrations of the grand geographical scale of the Rockies stimulated a new romantic vision of the White Mountains by Eastern artists in an attempt to compete. As a part of this trend, the first White Mountain guidebook to employ photographs (1879) emphasized man-made objects, trains and trestles, rather than nature.
