Historical archaeology is important to the interpretation of agricultural history because of what it reveals about the transformation of the landscape - the central feature of rural life. In New Hampshire, three major material culture studies are underway in agricultural history: the New Hampshire Farm Museum, Milton; the Harrisville Rural District; and the Hill Farm Project of the White Mountain National Forest. Each uses archaeology to establish a cultural context.
