- Description:
- As agriculture declined in New Hampshire's hill country in the late 19th century, the state promoted summer recreation in the area. In 1885 an artists' colony began forming in the Cornish-Plainfield area. A literary crowd, then lawyers and politicans, followed the artists. The summer colony obtained property much more cheaply than in New York. In turn, their taxes and local spending stimulated the economy, although there was little social interaction between colonists and townspeople.
