- Description:
- Apothecaries and medicine men dispensed a wide variety of medications in 19th-century New Hampshire. There were about a hundred different nostrums available in the United States in 1810, and over 50,000 in 1906. As New Hampshire's cities grew, so did the number of apothecaries. The first Manchester business directory, published in 1844, listed three druggists. In 1854 there were 15. Between 1890 and 1900, over 80 apothecaries and medicine manufacturers operated in Manchester. One apothecary carried an inventory of over 1,300 medicines. In addition to remedies found throughout the United States, New Hampshire residents could purchase herbal remedies manufactured locally by the United Society of Believers, or Shakers.
