- Description:
- In 1800, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, prospered and residents looked to the future, while the town's past played little part in the community's identity. But after the War of 1812 the area's important timber trade declined, and Portsmouth's merchants invested in manufacturing elsewhere. Under these conditions, a nostalgia movement grew. By the 1870's, the town was being promoted as "historic Portsmouth," and its past was celebrated as the nation's centennial in 1876 focused attention of the colonial era. During the 20th century, many buildings have been restored, but the emphasis has been on colonial structures and the obliteration of much 19th-century architecture has taken place.
