- Description:
- In 1886 Bishop Denis M. Bradley, the first bishop of the Catholic diocese of Manchester, New Hampshire, took steps to establish a Catholic college in the area. Saint Anselm College, a Benedictine institution, was incorporated in 1889. Ten days before the scheduled completion of the college's five-story building, a fire almost completely destroyed it. Reconstruction began in 1892, and a new building was completed in 1893. Initially, the college functioned mainly as a high school. Its existence was precarious until enrollment stabilized and a mortgage was paid off in 1905.
