The first U.S.S. 'Kearsarge' was a sloop-of-war built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in 1861. In 1862 the 'Kearsarge' began a two-year cruise during which it sank the 'Alabama,' a Confederate cruiser infamous for capturing 65 American ships and sinking the US gunboat 'Hatteras.' In sinking the 'Alabama' the 'Kearsarge' restored the confidence of Northern shipowners and made the seas generally safe for American shipping for the duration of the war.
