- Description:
- During the campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 1980, Ronald Reagan had a substantial lead in the polls over his nearest rival, George Bush, before losing to Bush in Iowa. Bush then gained ground steadily in New Hampshire until the Nashua debate of 23 February 1980. Reagan and Bush agreed to a two-man debate, but at the last minute Reagan called for a debate by all Republican candidates. Bush's refusal in the presence of the other candidates made him look petty, and changed the public's perception of Reagan. Three days later Reagan won 50% of the vote in a field of seven candidates. Bush won 22%.
