Description:
When New Hampshire native Franklin Pierce became President of the United States in 1852 the primary election was unknown. The major political parties nominated their candidates for the presidency according to each political party's rules, not according to any state laws. The system did not change significantly until New Hampshire adopted the direct primary law for state offices in 1909 and extended it in 1916 to the election of delegates to national conventions. The change to the presidential preference primary in 1949 made the New Hampshire primary more interesting and more meaningful, improved voter turnout, and drew national attention to New Hampshire.
