Description:
In the late 18th century demand developed for a musical instrument in New England's Congregational churches. Organs were too expensive for many churches. The bass viol was a popular alternative. Abraham Prescott (1789-1858), a schoolteacher turned instrument-maker, began manufacturing and selling the bass viol by 1819. As his business grew, Prescott moved it from Deerfield to Concord, New Hampshire, where he had a factory employing 19 people by 1850. Prescott's company survived, under a variety of names, until 1917.
