Description:
A number of historians have concluded that as the 18th century progressed, the position of the New England ministry gradually but steadily declined. In northern New England, however, few New Light clergymen were poorly paid, and in a region where society was less stratified than in southern New England, there was no loss of status for clergy who combined the ministry with secular employment. Most of the 25 New Light ministers who studied in Maine and New Hampshire enjoyed harmonious relationships with their congregations.
