- Description:
- Early in the Revolutionary War the Continental Congress decided to build 13 warships. One of the 13, the 'Raleigh,' was built at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Records of the vessel's construction reveal that shipbuilding at Portsmouth was already an efficient, highly-centralized industry. Work on the vessel began in February 1776. The vessel was launched in 60 days and fully rigged and equipped by the end of the summer. Although it was September 1777 before the 'Raleigh' set sail, Congress recognized the achievement of the Portsmouth yard and soon awarded it contracts for two more warships.
