- Description:
- In the 1820's-30's, cabinetmaking was one of the most extensive and successful enterprises in the flourishing rural town of Newport, New Hampshire. Located in the heart of an agricultural region, at the union of three branches of the Sugar River and the junction of two turnpikes, Newport had a strong tradition of processing wood by water power. This tradition may have stimulated Newport's furnituremaking operations. The town's decline as a cabinetmaking center apparently coincided with the depression of 1837, although some furnituremaking persisted into the 1840's and the 1850's.
