- Description:
- It was long believed that men and women in the United States prior to the Civil War lived in distinctly separate spheres, with women conducting chores in the private realm and men engaging in economic and political activities in the public sphere. Brigham Nims (1814-93), farmer, schoolteacher, and selectman of Roxbury, New Hampshire, broke many stereotypes of 19th-century manhood. Nims had a close relationship with his sister, and routinely performed household chores.
