- Description:
- Critics of the American Civil War have charged that it was "a rich man's war, but a poor man's fight." Information from the 1860 census for Conway, New Hampshire, supports the charge, showing that two poorer farm areas provided 53% of the town's soldiers although the areas represented only 27% of the town's population. Casualty rates for volunteers from the farm districts were almost three times greater than for volunteers from Conway's other five districts. Problems created by the war may also have accelerated the postwar decline of Conway's poor farm districts.
