- Description:
- Of the original nineteen Shaker villages, Canterbury Shaker Village is one of only two that exist today as more than museum villages. In 1977, a multidisciplinary recording team began a thorough assessment of Canterbury's resources to determine which features warranted presentation to the public. Only twenty-four buildings out of more than one hundred erected since Canterbury was established in 1792 have survived. The Canterbury study is significant because it quantifies and synthesizes data from disparate fields of inquiry, and examines changing spatial relationships among clusters of buildings widely separated by intervening landscape. The project may be an appropriate model for many other communities.
