- Description:
- Of all the New Hampshire units to serve in the Civil War, the one with the highest fatality rate was the 16th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. This was a nine-month militia regiment that served only from the winter of 1862 until the summer of 1863. It never saw a single battle, but was decimated by disease brought on by poor rations and unhealthy conditions in Louisiana. Nearly 30% of the total enrollment of more than 900 men died during their tour of duty or soon afterwards. Fewer than 18% of the survivors reenlisted.
