Description:
Research begun over 40 years ago suggests that New Hampshire may have played a major role in the origins of the American spiritual. New Hampshire was very much involved in the Great Awakening when that religious revival swept the colonies in the 1730's and 1740's. This revival led to a new kind of music more suited to the boisterous services of the "New Light" Christians. Joshua Smith (1760-95), compiled the earliest and most widely used collection of hymns and spiritual songs based on this new tradition. Smith and three other compilers of early folk hymnals were actively involved in revivals in New Hampshire as young men, and spent important parts of their later ministries there.
