- Description:
- During the American Revolution, New Hampshire Rangers and the Abnaki Indians set aside earlier enmity and jointly guarded New England's infant settlements in the upper Connecticut Valley. Timothy Bedel (1737-87), a New Hampshire veteran of the Seven Years' War, played a key role in securing and maintaining the services of the Abnakis. Although a contemporary described Bedel as a "bold soldier but a desolute (sic) character," Bedel proved his mettle in his work with the Abnakis. He and General Jacob Bayley assiduously cultivated their support. At times Bedel even supplied them with ammunition and clothing at his own expense.
