Description:
Examines reasons why delegates from New Hampshire's rural Grafton County voted 10 to one for ratification of the proposed federal constitution at the New Hampshire constitutional convention in 1788. Progressive historians argued that the heavily settled coastal areas of revolutionary America voted overwhelmingly for ratification of the constitution, and that the sparsely settled, supposedly more democratic frontier produced opposition. But in the case of Grafton County, local political leaders with kinship and economic ties to the state's seacoast elite gained control of the delegation and influenced its votes toward ratification.
