Description:
The recent interest of the National Register of Historic Places in developing criteria for evaluating designed and cultural landscapes could lead to recognition for many of New Hampshire's landscape resources, and may be a useful tool for the planning and management of these landscapes. The cases of Harrisville, a well-preserved 19th-century mill community, and of the Murray Hill Summer Home District illustrate the point. The assessment required for registration can provide the basis for educated planning regulations and considerations, such as the inclusion of a landscape preservationist on existing conservation commission boards or the establishment of rural historic district commissions.
