Description:
Recent research has shown that New Hampshire's provincial statehouse was much more elegant than was commonly believed. The building was a wooden structure, erected in 1758 and finished in the mid-1760's. Later years saw a slow deterioration until the 1830's, when it had become "unsightly and inconvenient." The structure was removed from its original location in Portsmouth in 1836, but a portion survived as a dwelling for another 130 years. It was moved to Portsmouth's historic precinct called Strawberry Bank in 1969, and in 1990 was recorded, dismantled, and put into storage.
