- Contrary to initial reports, Brigadier General Theodore Ripley (1835-66) of the 14th New Hampshire Volunteers was killed, not by former rebels or members of the Ku Klux Klan, but by former members of his own regiment. Ripley's incompetence led to the death of many members of his regiment in 1864. Frank Buffum, the regimental historian, covered up for four comrades who killed Ripley in revenge in Emmanuel County, Georgia, for his cruel leadership and incompetence.
