- Description:
- As events in Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1858 and 1859 illustrate, the city's politics were intertwined with ethnicity and prohibition. Manchester grew from a rural area to a major industrial center between the 1830's and the 1850's. The attitudes of the Protestant majority toward the growing Irish Catholic population was mixed. Republican political leaders exploited deeply felt nativist fears and attitudes toward liquor, thereby increasing ethnic and religious divisions in the city. This probably contributed to the riots of 1858 and 1859.
