Description:
Analyzes demographic patterns at the Shaker village in Canterbury, New Hampshire, which appear to be different from those of other Shaker communities. Populations in other communities began declining significantly around the middle of the 19th century. At Canterbury the population peaked in the mid-19th century, but did not decline significantly until the turn of the 20th century. When spiritual activity was at its highest, membership rolls expanded correspondingly, with women outnumbering men most of the time. A high percentage of Canterbury Shakers came from cities. While other 19th-century New England residents flocked to the cities, many Canterbury Shakers left urban environments to live a sheltered pastoral life.
