- Description:
- From 1875 to 1958 the manufacture and sale of small, adorned household items called fancywork was a substantial income-producing endeavor for the Shaker community of Canterbury, New Hampshire. The fancywork industry gained momentum as other ventures at the village declined. The goods were easy to produce, inexpensive, and portable. The industry also gave Shaker women some individualism and independence in a community dominated by men for most of its history.
