A two-week journey that New Hampshire historian and scientist Jeremy Belknap made to the White Mountains of central New Hampshire in 1784 was the most significant event of his life. The journey formed the basis for volume three of the 'History of New Hampshire.' It was also a personal journey of discovery for Belknap, then forty years old. The physical experience of mountain climbing became transformed into a spiritual experience of self-knowledge and piety, and fueled his continuing sense of struggle.
