- Description:
- Incorporated in 1824, Randolph, New Hampshire, depended on farming and lumbering in its early years and later on summer visitors who built and maintained trails in the White Mountains. Randolph began to attract hikers and climbers in the 1850's, when the first railway reached the area. Visitors stayed at first in the town's new hotels, but by the early 20th century summer visitors began building cottages. To this day, the cottagers have taken considerable interest in maintaining Randolph's trails and preserving its forests. They have also supported the local church and worked with year-round residents to maintain the tranquility of Randolph.
