- Description:
- Scotch-Irish settlers played an important role in a Massachusetts/New Hampshire boundary dispute over the control of rich timberland during 1719-41 following the settlement of many Scotch-Irish immigrants from Northern Ireland. Disputes over the boundary led to sporadic court cases, mob violence, and shootings when Massachusetts authorities tried to collect taxes from farmers in Londonderry, New Hampshire. The presence of the Scotch-Irish settlers strengthened New Hampshire's claim to lands in the upper Merrimack Valley and beyond.
