Sarah Josepha Hale, author and editor, lived a quiet life in the village of Newport, New Hampshire, until 1828. A farmer's daughter, she is perhaps best known as the author of the poem "Mary Had a Little Lamb" (1830). In 1806, at the age of 18, Sarah Josepha opened a school in Newport. When her husband died in 1822 she opened a millinery business and wrote and published poetry and stories to support her family. The publication of her novel, 'Northwood: A Tale of New England' (1827) led to an invitation to move to Boston where she started a career as editor of the most popular women's magazines of her day, 'Ladies' Magazine' and 'Godey's Lady's Book'.
