Description:
Jews have lived in Manchester, New Hampshire, continuously since the 1880's, and have played a significant role in the community. There was an established synagogue there by 1890, and a second started in 1897. The Jewish community grew slowly until the 1930's, when a number of Jewish manufacturers arrived from New York to make use of space vacated by defunct textile firms. By the time the United States entered World War II, there were perhaps five hundred Jews in Manchester, 154 of whom served in the war. Over the years, the community adapted to life in America. Differences between the two synagogues reflect different approaches to the harmonizing of Jewish traditions to American ways.
