Description:
New Hampshire's White Mountain resort hotels began to decline in the early 20th century for a variety of reasons. The increasingly common automobile gave vacationers more flexibility, so that they were less dependent on railways and the hotels often associated with them. More and more wealthy vacationers deserted the resort hotels as time passed because they became less exclusive. Instead of staying at hotels the wealthy bought land and built cottages. At the same time, Americans became more attracted to a physically active vacation, in contrast to the largely sedentary daily life at the great resorts.
