Description:
Artists-in-residence made an important contribution to the development of New Hampshire's hotel and tourism industry by popularizing the scenic wonders of the White Mountains and by participating in the social life of the hotels. During the golden age of the grand resort hotels, from the 1850's to the 1920's, nearly every hotel had an artist-in-residence. Hotel guests provided artists with a ready clientele, while the work of artists such as Benjamin Champney, Frank H. Shapleigh, and Jean Paul and Emily Selinger helped attract more visitors to the White Mountains.
