Description:
New Hampshire's White Mountain hotels achieved their heyday between 1885 and 1910. At the peak of the hotel industry there were approximately two hundred hotels, inns, and boarding houses in the region accommodating forty or more guests each. In the 1890's nearly 12,000 people could be housed at one time in the mountains. The hotels began their decline toward the end of the 19th century, in part because of a growing desire for personal and family independence that fostered the "cottage" movement.
