- Description:
- The coming of the railroad in the mid-19th century caused rapid growth for the tourism industry in New Hampshire's White Mountains - a fact well-documented by the recently discovered diary of Ezra Beal. Beal, a native of Maine, was an enthusiastic supporter of the Atlantic & St. Lawrence Railroad. He built most of the stations on the southern portion of the line and, in 1851, the White Mountain Station House in Gorham, New Hampshire. Beal's journal gives a clear indication of the extraordinary activity that occurred around Gorham in the early 1850's, when the railroad arrived. Eventually, however, the automobile took away much of the railroad's passenger traffic, and led to a more casual type of travel that did not favor the grand resort hotels.
