- Description:
- New England's 18th- and early 19th-century taverns offered shelter, warmth, and food for travelers and places to exchange news and goods and to hold meetings. The first tavern in New Hampshire's White Mountains appeared around 1788. A number of other, more substantial, inns followed this simple log hut in the early 19th century, including several built and operated by the Crawford family in Crawford Notch. All of these early taverns had disappeared by around 1900.
