- Description:
- Between 1779 and 1799, New Hampshire clergyman and historian Jeremy Belknap corresponded with Ebenezer Hazard of Philadelphia. Belknap's letters reveal a side of him scarcely seen in such formal works as the 'History of New Hampshire.' The letters show a lonely, thoughtful man, despairing of his situation in life, using pen and ink as a substitute for flesh and blood, releasing onto paper the pent-up feelings of long winter months, and generating in his solitude theories to explain the whims of nature, the works of government, the varieties of religious experience, the course of history, and the ways of humankind.
