Description:
The exhibition 'A House of Dreams Untold: The Story of the MacDowell Colony' opened at the New Hampshire Historical Society in June 1996. The New Hampshire Historical Society began planning this exhibition in 1993 as part of a statewide celebration of the MacDowell Colony, first opened to musicians, artists, and authors by composer Edward MacDowell and his wife Marian in Peterborough in 1907. The exhibition consisted of three phases or sections: the first focused on the MacDowells and how their backgrounds and experiences led them to Peterborough; the second dealt with the growth of the colony; and the third explored the experiences of colonists. The exhibition employed objects such as reproductions of Edward MacDowell's log cabin and some of the studios.
