New recordings have reintroduced Edward MacDowell and other American composers of the romantic era to an appreciative audience. Born in New York in 1860, MacDowell studied in Europe, mainly Germany, and wrote most of his large compositions there. He returned to America in 1888, taught at Columbia, and became attached to the musical community known as the "Boston Boys." MacDowell died in 1908, and his generation's music, inspired by German works, fell out of favor after World War I when all things German were denigrated.
