- Description:
- Composer Edward Alexander MacDowell and his wife, Marian, established a home at Peterborough, New Hampshire, in 1890 and turned the property into America's first artists' colony in 1907. The MacDowell Colony provided a quiet refuge where serious artists, authors, and musicians could work. Marian served as manager and director of the colony for forty years, stepping down in 1946 after a serious illness. The colony, which still functions, has offered a haven to many famous and not-so-famous American artists.
